Summary/Abstract: Religion and history. A new picture of the prehistory of Israel and the Christian faith. The reconstruction of the prehistory and early history of Israel by Albecht Alt and his influential students such as Gerhard von Rad and Martin Noth relied on oral tradition. In the meantime this picture became deconstructed by archaeological facts, redactional criticism and a new evaluation of oral tradition. In consequence, the Old Testament scholars learned that they had to take the narratives on pre- and early history as a reconstructed memory of the past, governed by the belief of their authors that the Lord is governing history for the sake of his elected people. Therefore they have to be evaluated as witnesses of the creed of the Biblical authors. And this means that the concept of “Heilsgeschichte” has to be changed in a history of faith. The modern reader may take the biblical testimonies as an advice to trust in God.
