Summary/Abstract: The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, in particular the proliferation of nuclear weapons is one of the most discussed topics on different forums around the globe. The main issue remains unchanged already since the beginning of nuclear race in the 50s and that is the creation and functioning of mechanism that would limit and prevent countries from acquiring more and new kinds of these kinds of weapons. When the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has been signed back in 1968 two categories of states were created, those who already possessed nuclear weapons, the so called nuclear powers and non-nuclear powers – states that committed themselves not to seek to acquire nuclear weapons in the future. This discrepancy persists even in 21st century, when the global situation has change significantly. The different perception of international community and different perception of threats leads some countries to seek to acquire nuclear weapons in order to secure their own security or existence, North Korea is one on these states. Besides the fact of undemocratic and isolated character of its regime the country perceives its nuclear program as a single guarantee of its security and also its sole existence.
