Summary/Abstract: The issue of motivation and a range of factors influencing pupils' achievements are discussed in the article. The objective of the article is to analyse reasons of low learning motivation with reference to the data of a survey on pupils' achievements, their attitudes to school and teachers as well as why they miss lessons and drop out. The following conclusions are made: The level of pupils' achievements depends on school climate and their relationships with teachers; The same factors influence pupils' motivation at different schools: rural, urban and those at regional centres; Teachers may encourage pupils to learn through collaborative and communicative climate in the classroom, they should help pupils to understand their individual strong points and weaknesses and to explain how to improve their learning.
