Summary/Abstract: The following essay deals with the working concepts of eros and agape as opted and proposed by Benedict XVI in his encyclical Deus caritas est. The considerations are intended to examine and elucidate the given actuality with special regard to Christian charity for the suffering, and they subsequently endeavour to clarify the specific profile of the Church’s charitable deacony. In the field of theology after all, eros and agape—the vitality of mutual desire and devotion in love—may be considered a fairly new uncommon topic. The present article, however, sets priorities and accordingly investigates the presence of eros in the mutual relationship between God and man as well as among men. The final chapter aims at showing the essential significance of eros for the charitable practice, i.e. the helping and healing love and affection for a fellow human being.
