Summary/Abstract: The subject of this article is a comparison of the old and new regulations concerning the parish-priest according to canons 279–294 of the CCEO and canons 489–510 of motu proprio Cleri sanctitati of Pius XII. The content of this article has been limited to the above-mentioned canons. The comparison is completed by a short editorial note on the new codification in the bulletin Nuntia of the Pontifical Commission for the revision of the Code of Oriental Canon Law. The comparison first describes, together with the definition of the parish-priest, the comparison of the old and new concepts of the parish: the parish-priest no longer administers the parish primarily as a benefice, but he is first of all the pastor of souls. The new regulations have eliminated the distinction between the parish-priest and the quasi-parish-priest. Then follows an old vs. new comparison of the nomination of the parish-priest and related conditions, the most important of which is the abolition of the right of presentation, which nevertheless is still present in CIC 1983. With regard to the parish-priest’s office, the most important change is the abolition of the distinction between removable and irremovable parish-priest. Finally, the parish-priest’s rights and duties under the old and new systems are discussed. The main features of the new regulation in the CCEO are brevity and organization, particularly with greater emphasis on particular law.
