Summary/Abstract: Based on relevant documentation from the beginning of the eighteenth century, the study deals with reconstructing the marriage strategies of two major Wallachian aristocratic families. The main questions of the investigation concern the methods of building the marriage policy, the decisive factors of this policy, the attitude of the main persons involved, as well as the perception of separation/divorce as a failure of the marriage. The families under examination, Brezoianu and Filipescu, were powerful both politically and economically within the Wallachian society. Their alliance through marriage however did not reach its aims: the lack of descendants provoked the decline of both families for a long period of time.
