Family and Society in Wallachia (XVII th century)

Summary/Abstract: The study deals with aspects of daily life in the Wallachian society in the seventeenth century concerning family life. The marriage strategies of well-off and noble families are analysed with respect to the role played by fathers in choosing the right partner for their offspring and contracting a marriage that was meant to strengthen the social ranking and the wealth of the family. The model for asuccessful and inteligent marriage policy in this respect was the noble Constantin Cantacuzéne. The study also discusses the specific rituals that accompanied the engagement, the wedding, and the baptisms, as well as the significance of marital gifts and of the dowry in the fate of married women.The last part of the article deals with the divorce and the cases, however the eighteenth century brought about a significant change in this respect: all matters concerning the family entered the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church. “Familia constituie de câţiva ani pentru istoriografia franceză, engleză şi cea italiană subiecte predilecte pentru un număr important de cărţi şi articole, dintre care multe vor fi amintite şi folosite pe parcursul acestui studiu. Dar cercetarea de faţă nu îşi propune o analiză sociologică asupra familiei, ci mai curând surprinderea marilor evenimente din sfera cotidianului care domină viaţa de zi cu zi. Vom fi interesaţi de modul de organizare şi riturile specifice la botez şi nuntă. Se vor descrie practicile legate de logodnă, de alcătuirea zestrei sau schimbul de daruri din cadrul ceremonialului nunţii. De asemenea ne vom concentra atenţia asupra sentimentelor provocate de dragostea dintre soţi, de ura dintre fraţi sau de suferinţa provocată la moartea celor dragi. În absenţa unor cronici de familie sau a unei corespondenţe între membrii familiei, analiza va fi posibilă exploatând un alt tip de documente. Testamentele, foile de zestre, actele de proprietate ne descriu într-o manieră “criptică” viaţa cotidiană a celor care ne-au precedat.”[…]
