Summary/Abstract: The paper follows up the emancipation of literary history and its methodology in relation to deterministic thinking about literature. Renovating of literary history in the beginning of 20th century is not connected to traveling ideas in literary theory. The text compares two interpretations of Shakespeare, offered by H. Taine as a literary historian and by V. Mathesus – anglisist from Charles University in Prague.
