Summary/Abstract: In this article Malebranche's treatment of the purpose of human freedom and sin is considered. As a substance consisting of soul and body, man is destined to live two lives: one temporal on the earth, another eternal in the Kingdom of God. By means of freedom and sin, man prepares his own soul for the post-mortal life. Malebranche thinks that freedom, as well as sin, is nothingness; therefore, an evil doer does not move to happiness, he or she just sticks to an illusory good. In treating original sin, Malebranche relies on the ideas of St Augustine.
