Summary/Abstract: Aurelius Augustine and Thomas Aquinas commented ingeniously on the Sermon on the Mount. The author of this article focuses on the ethical content of these comments. The Sermon is the foundation of Christian morality. Augustine interprets it using a metaphor of seven steps leading to the highest happiness in a reunion with God. Thomas Aquinas develops Augustinian ideas further, and explains the blessings of Christ as the guiding principles of Christian life, which, being internalized, become personal virtues and sources of good deeds. In commenting on the Sermon, both commentators widely and skilfully employ Platonic and Aristotelian teaching.
