Summary/Abstract: This essay examines Alexandru Maftei’s recent screen adaptation of Mircea Eliade’s well known novel Miss Christina by placing an emphasis on the title character’s spectral yet palpable quality, similar to that of the magi in Yeats’s famous poem. In such a comparative context mediated through cinematic art, the transfixed painter Egor is the artist whose horrified curiosity Miss Christina stirs from the moment he sees her beautiful portrait. Unlike Eliade’s story, which ends with a frisson of suspended failure, Maftei’s movie offers a horrifying vision of the artist tragically trapped in his precarious mortal condition.
