TRANSLATING T. S. ELIOT IN COMMUNIST ROMANIA

Summary/Abstract: My essay examines translation as an important dimension of Romanian culture in the Communist era and as a small cultural revolution in its own right showing that the country’s historical circumstances make it hard, almost impossible, to dissociate political and social change from the translation process. Specifically, the traditional mechanics of translation changed immediately after the Communist takeover, shaping Romanian culture into a locus of new literary forms, carried out by looking simultaneously to the West and inward to a space of ideological oppression and dictatorial practices, in a manner Jana Evans Braziel and Anita Mannur in a different context liken to Janus, a figure of the Greek pantheon¸whose gaze is directed in the two directions at the same time.
