Reports and Austrian Travel Accounts Concerning the Strategic Positions of the Romanians Principalities (1716-1739)

Summary/Abstract: In 1716, the Ottoman Empire considered that is was the time to get even with the Habsburgs, for the defeat of the end of seventeenth century. The result of the campaign was the opposite. In 1718, the hostilities ended with the peace treaty from Passarowitz, which brought to Austria the sangeac of Temesvar (Banatul de Timisoara), The North of Serbia, and a part of southern Wallachia (Oltenia). Since the moment of the conquest, information the reports, about the conflict between the Austrian officials for jurisdiction and fees, arrived from Oltenia. The authors were Friedrich Schwanz, Franz Paul von Wallis, Baron of Rebentisch, and Karl von Tige. These reports were designated to gather the accurate data about the county: geographical and strategic position, economy, religion and society. In the same time, started the design of the first topographical map of Oltenia, as well. The strategic interest for Oltenia was related to the new configuration of the frontier, the Low Danube was the natural border between the Ottoman Empire and Austria, and the Court of Viena wanted to strengthen the Austrian side of the river.
