Summary/Abstract: „The Romanian chronicles of the sixteenth-seventeenth century are tributary to the geme. They are a m«~re sequence of chronologically arranged events, with no particular attention given to the cause-etTect relation. The se(~o:nd half of the seventeenth century, with the late Renaissance historiography inspiring tbe intellectual elite of the Romanian Principalities, marked a change in the approacb to historical events. The authors' comments, as samples of the mentality of the time, became richer and savory, and more ample referenc•ewas made to the neighbouring peoples. However, this reference is far from what we call today the other's image. The image of the Hungarians in the medieval RODlanian historiographic texts does not illustrate a cohere.nt or rational approach to a foreign people. It appears integrated into the evolution of facts in Romanian historiography, with judgement made free from any cliche or prt.:judice. It painted positive or negative according to th~ interests of land, with the Hungarian Iqngdom and Transylvania perceived alternately as sources of benefit or detriment to the Romanian Princes.”[…]
