Summary/Abstract: Language studies are more and more the input of new approaches concerning natural language processing. Though this seems mainly the domain of engineering and artificial intelligence, generative studies of various aspects of language productions are important in defining the language structures, not only in a given language, but cross linguistically. The creation of treebanks benefits from the increased attention of both linguists and engineers for its multiple uses, i.e. creating language resources and validating the existing language theories, with a view, in the future, to be used for automated translations and other IT language tools. In our general attempt to create such a data basis we advocate in he present paper the assumption that linguistic resources should focus on phrase structures rather than sentence structure. We focus on a case study of demonstratives that are defined as adjectives. We demonstrate that for annotating language corpus in parallel treebanks to be used for automated translation, we need to start from the results of a sound linguistic analysis and determine the degree of regularity, defined by the possibility of automation, and the irregularities that are still to be solved by humans. The linguistic arguments are based on the structure of the DP in English and Romanian.
