Summary/Abstract: In the first part of the text the author puts in question the competence of literary critique as a literary activity which deals with giving judgments about the value of literary work. This doubt is based on the unsuccessful attempts to establish a science of literature, namely a theory of literature. In regard to the literary theorist, the literary critic is lay who spontaneously deals with literary work. Due to this spontaneity the criticism should remain in the field of privacy. Therefore literary critique became an institution which creates literary canons. This should be explained in sociology and psychology of culture. In the second part the author, using the example of contemporary Serbian critique and leading Serbian critics, demonstrates the extent to which literary critique can create false canons and promote false values.
