Summary/Abstract: The study presents an attempt to answer the question of whether the closest surroundings of European capital cities are becoming as innovative as the capital cities themselves. The value of an aggregate index of innovation was defined for the EU NUTS 2 level regions based on eight characteristics. Against the background of changes occurring in the values of the Innovation Index in the European regional space, the study assesses the effects of capital cities on their closest surroundings in the context of trends observed in terms of innovation. The analysis covered countries in which the capital city is at the same time the NUTS 2 level region. It also discusses the variables determining the differences in the Innovation Index values between capital cities and the areas that surround them.
