Summary/Abstract: Theoretical Approaches to Controversial Decisions in Medical Ethics. Certain decisions of patients could be considered as controversial because they put to the test the concept of autonomy of the person and also that of self-determination in the decision-making process. In contemporary medical ethics, the principle of respect for the autonomy of persons is fundamental, as the one regarding the respect due to the decisions of autonomous persons. In this article we aim to analyze the way in which theories that belong to medical ethics have treated controversial decisions of competent pacients. We will also try to determine which is the moral status of the controversial decisions, taking into account both the idea of the autonomy of the rational person and the autonomy of decisions.
