Conditions of Life of the Fishermen along the Varna Seaside during the First Decade of the 20th Century

Summary/Abstract: The article considers the fishermen's occupation which is among the most strenuous ones; it requires physical strength, love of the sea and abilities for collective working. Special attention is paid to the various categories of fishermen, classified according their fishing equipment and the use of another person's labour; the relationships in these categories in the process of profit dividing are also examined. Attention is devoted to the income and expenditure of the fishing co-operatives. As an occupation along the Varna seaside, fishing can not provide steady living of the fishermen and their families; that is why the authors make a study of the rest of additional occupations agriculture, vine-growing, transporting of goods, etc. Of special interest are the descriptions of the fishermen's house? with their primitive organization, the fishermen's clothing and food, as well as the making of some dishes with fish. Special attention is devoted to fishermen's living philosophy, to their relations, traditional knowledge of weather and popular medicine, to fishermen's feasts and customs, amusements, beliefs, to the phraseological combinations and proverbs created by the fishermen.
