Summary/Abstract: Personality of Vetranion Bishop of Tomis – interpretations on the conflict with Emperor Valens and correspondence with St. Basil the Great. The present study does not intend giving any findings on Vetranion, because few sources on this character have been referred and published by the researchers, but it proposes an interpretative analysis of the sources and of the religious and political context of Scythia Minor region but also of the empire. This analysis helps us to draw the portrait of Bishop Vetranion and to reconstruct the incident in Tomis (the confrontation between Valens and Vetranion), which outlined the bishop profile of inflexible apologist for Orthodoxy. The second part of the study addresses the controversial issue of authorship of the Passion of St. Sabbas the Goth, involving the exchange of letters with St. Basil the Great. The identification of Vetranion as correspondent of the great Cappadocian discover new dimensions and meanings of his personality and activity, such as cultural profile, missionary concerns or ecumenical dimension of the relations which the Bishop of Tomis he had with Eastern Christianity.
