Summary/Abstract: The article follows the development of the funeral rituals, connected to the way of life and the religious customs of the Jews in Sofia in the 20th century. It emphasizes the character and the changes in the pattern of the tombstones (construction, volume – form, plastic specificity, ornaments, motifs, signs – symbols, inscriptions), which reflect the artistic and stylistic features of the epoch as a whole. The accent is on the Jewish funeral customs and the kind of the tombstones, influenced by the cultural traditions of the other ethno-religious communities in Bulgaria and in Europe, as well as on the features of the “ethnic”, typical of the Sofia Jews from the 20th century.
