Summary/Abstract: The research presented in this article was carried out at the end of the first stage of primary school in Poland, as part of a 2008 nationwide research project financed by European Social Funds. The article concerns children’s school achievements in the Polish language. The children’s results are interpreted in the light of their school context. It means that the teachers’ opinions on their work and observations of school practice are also taken into account. The most interesting conclusion is that children should practice language at school more often. The teacher should trust in children’s abilities and create the condition facilitating language learning. Another conclusion is that children are not given a chance to show their skills during school work since teachers focus on formal knowledge about language.
