Summary/Abstract: Since the times of its first president, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Turkey has pursued an unambiguously pro-Western line, as reflected in its membership of NATO and efforts to join the European economic and political structures, taken for almost half a century. But the decline of the North Atlantic Alliance’s power and change of its character, an impasse in Turkish-EU relations, and the several years’ long rule of a party with Islamic roots bring up the question about Turkey’s geopolitical future. It assumes added importance in view of the country’s geographic position and its considerable demographic, economic and military potential.
