The Introductory Semantic Characteristics of Selected Meanings of the Adjective równy (Equal, Straight)

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyze two views in lexicography on three predicates of the item równy. Descriptive units have been based on A. Bogus ławski's (1987, 1993, and others) criterion of entering formal-functional proportional relation. The contradiction test shows lack of semantic relationbetween the predicates and definitional suggestions included in the entries of monolingual dictionaries. The same test indicates the occurrence of semantic subsequent relation between predicates: równy1, równy2, równy3, and the predicate ktoś przewiduje, że p (sb. predicts that p). Semantic differences between individual units are associated with the kind of predicated objects. In case of równy1 prediction concerns the set of elements of material objects, in case of równy2 - physical events, and in case of równy3 - psychic events.
