CHINA’S URBAN POVERTY DISTRIBUTION: ECONOMIC GROWTH, SOCIAL INEQUALITY, AND THE GEOGRAPHY OF POVERTY

Summary/Abstract: I shall focus here on the emerging new poverty in China, social inequality under China’s rapid economic development, the dynamics of urban poverty generation, intergenerational mobility in urban China, and the importance of growth in agricultural incomes for poverty reduction. The objective of this paper is to emphasize the importance of sociospatial mobility in urban China, the transition to a market driven system, the emergence of social differentiation in Chinese cities, the mechanisms of urban poverty generation, and China’s ability to sustain the pace of poverty reduction. This paper seeks to fill a gap in the current literature by examining the patterns of urban poverty in China, the spatiality of new urban poverty, the formation of impoverished neighbourhoods, the rate of growth in China’s domestic demand, and the level of mobility in urban China.
