ON INTERLINGUISTIC EQUIVALENCE; THE STRANGE CASE OF TABLE AND MASA

Summary/Abstract: This paper aims at proving that interlinguistic equivalence depends in a direct ratio on cultural translatability and/or untranslatability and that the latter is not a matter of “spots" or "stumbling blocks”, but a diffuse category, present throughout the text and a reflection of group mentality. Therefore, even things taken for granted could represent problems in translation if one ignores the cultural load of each and every word, on the one hand, as well as the fact that translation is a constant negotiation between source- and target-language and culture.
