Summary/Abstract: The article concentrates on several modes of derogation in the vocabulary of modern English. Its main contention is that, as a species of modality, derogation should not only be in the focus of lexicology, but also in that of stylistics, since it not only responds to the communicative needs of the language, but also to the individualization of human language.
