Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the evolution of the names for pearls in Slavonic languages. All three analysed terms ñ biser, perla and ûemËug ñ are borrowings from non-Slavonic languages (biser from Arabic, perla from Romance and žemčug probably from Chinese), which came to the Slavic territory along with oriental tradesmen. The reconstruction of their development can help to reconstruct the early medieval trading contacts of the Slavs.
