Summary/Abstract: In Romanian historiography, Gavril Movilă’s exile and marriage in Transylvania have been regarded as a time of deprivation, humiliation and marginalization. Based on the two wills of the voivode and of his wife, Elisabeth Zolyomi, as well as on additional facts and information, the paper offers a completely different view. The Transylvanian exile of the deposed voivode Gavril Movilă, far from being a sad and humiliating experience, enabled him in fact to contract a successful marriage, which earned him considerable wealth and admission into the ranks of Transylvanian nobility. Except for a failed attempt to return to the throne with the help of Prince Bethlen Gabor, Gavril Movilă seems to have led a comfortable life, in keeping with his position, as testified by the prince himself.
