Summary/Abstract: In the late 1990s, when Jerzy Buzek was prime minister, I was invited to dinner by a foreign diplomat, who came home late, because he had some urgent work to do. The meal lasted quite long, because the participants could not communicate very well, probably due to the fact that the diplomat was a lawyer (as most German diplomats seem to be), while his guests were recent graduates in international relations and history. They called themselves “realists,” which my host probably interpreted as a suggestion on their part that he himself might not be capable of a realistic assessment or be likely to show excessive idealism.
