Summary/Abstract: While admitting the weak connections between the Romanian political parties and the group within societies, most of the studies do not research one of the main causes of this lack of communication: the fact that the political parties did not emerged as a consequence of some socio-cultural cleavages, but in a top-bottom manner. In this respect, the article tries to find out whether there are any cleavages at all in Romania, how were they affected by communism and last but not least, what parties might be related to these cleavages. One unexpected conclusion is the fact that although the cleavages shape the electoral outcome and the parties are connected to certain divisions, some of these represent camps which are supposed to generate other parties.
