Summary/Abstract: Legitimacy has become an indicator of acknowledged power, turned into authority. Most of the times this value oscillates between two poles: lawfulness and popularity. Hardly can this satisfy the more demanding expectations of contemporary political life. Nowadays, the leaders are more pragmatic. They operate with performance criteria in the field of evaluation. The govern in power cannot legitimate itself only through complying with the norms of the democratic game but it must prove competence and performance. Competence, adequacy to its social role and the results of its governing determine the legitimacy or illegitimacy of the political power, notwithstanding its colour.
