Summary/Abstract: The article is a reminder of the controversial two-volume publication The Common Slavonic Language among the Other European Common Languages in the Past and in Present Times, written by A. S. Budilovič in the latter decades of the 19th century. Recommending Russian as a common language for all the Slavs, the author inter alia argues that Russia and the Russian language are the unique heirs of Church Slavonic with its highly developed vocabulary and faithfully preserved semantic values of Orthodox religion. It is for this reason that the chapter on The formation and fate of the Common Church Slavonic language is given a prominent place in the part devoted to the Slavonic languages and must be read as a sort of introduction to the chapter finally describing the first steps of the Russian language on its way to function as the common Slavonic language in times to come.
