The “Vocabulare” by Noël de Berlaimont and the “Introductio ad linguam Czechicam” (Leipzig 1602 and 1611)

Summary/Abstract: In its first part the article proves that the four evidently incomplete prints of an anonymous and undated “Dictionariolum hexaglosson” listed in the “Knihopis českých a slovenských tisků” (ą 16.438) contain a phrase-book, epistolary, and vocabulary typical of the so-called Berlaimont tradition and can be identified as damaged copies of the six-language “Dictionariolum” printed in Leipzig in 1602 and (with a new title-page) in 1611. This is the first and so far only Berlaimont edition with a column in Czech. Until now the small introduction to Czech orthography and pronunciation at the very end of the Leipzig print has been completely neglected in the history of Czech. The second part of the article discusses its contents in relation to 16th-century Czech grammaticography and points out the specific innovations in the codified norms. Fully preserved only in the copies at Oxford (Taylorian Institution) and Gotha (Forschungsbibliothek Friedenstein) the text of the ‘Introductio’ is republished in the appendix.
