Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the present research is to define peculiarities of music teacher’s subject competence in educational practice. The results of a qualitative content analysis highlighted the factors that exert impact upon subject competence of music teacher educational activity: the conceptual understanding of musical education at school, the changes in teacher’s role, personal qualities of a specialist and continuous subject competence development. The qualitative research was performed under the guidance of qualitative research specialists of Interuniversity Consortium of Doctoral Studies in Education modular study programme (prepared under the project No. ESF/2004/2.5.0-K01-012) prof. habil. dr. M. Barkauskaite (Vilnius Pedagogical University), prof. habil. dr. B. Bitinas (Vilnius Pedagogical University), prof. habil. dr. A. Juodaityte (Šiauliai University) and prof. habil. dr. M.
