Summary/Abstract: Machine-readable dictionaries have enjoyed growing popularity in recent years for both pedagogic and economic reasons. By proving an environment with a variety of options and materials that users can exploit, and some kind of catalogue and advisory service to help them do so, such dictionaries can offer a wider and more flexible range of opportunities than printed dictionaries. Because users are largely left to their own devices, such dictionaries can also be seen as providing information on the cheap, potentially substituting for printed dictionaries. There are, in other words, two ways of looking at machine-readable dictionaries. One is as a means of improving efficiency, the other as a mean of cutting costs.
