Summary/Abstract: The School of Mines from Paris was one of the Parisian institutions of high education that contributed substantially to the modernization of Romania through the formation of its elites. The present study is based on the researches done in 1998 at the archives and library of this prestigious cultural centre, where I consulted certificates of registration, documents regarding the students and the yearbooks of the school. The first Romanian who studied there was the future writer and liberal political man Ion Ghica who spent two years at the School of Mines (1838-1840). For the period under study, until 1925, from the foundation of the institution I discovered 97 students originated from Romania, out of which a great number remarked themselves in the economy, politics and culture of their native country. It was a great advantage in modern Romania and the starting point for a successful career in the domain of geology, mines and geophysics.
