Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the biography of Gottfried Benn and intends to retrace - throughout the life of the poet - an individual and a social history. The Mertens novel is a fictional biography for only such a vehicle could explain and justify the poet's estrangement. The appeal to fiction allows biographical literature to bring an impossible testimony or to correct instances of silence.
