Summary/Abstract: The Orthopedic Institute “Marija Zvijezda” was established by the Austro-Hungarian military authorities in mid-September in 1915 in the newly built orphanage of the Trappist monastery “Marija Zvijezda” near Banja Luka. It was a “backup hospital” of the military command in Sarajevo and the only “institute for the treatment of war sick people in Bosnia and Herzegovina”. During World War I the managers of the Orthopedic Institute “Marija Zvijezda” were Dr Boleslav Zmigróda and Dr Nikola Weitgruber and a physician assistant was Heinrich Fantl. Nurses were working in the Institute as well. Dr Todor Jeremic took over medical and administrative service of the Institute after World War I. As of May 1, 1919 the Orthopedic Institute of Banja Luka was under the Ministry of Social Affairs of Commission for Bosnia and Herzegovina. The National Defense Organization and State have taken over the funding. The Institute came under the protection of the National Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo. Due to financial problems the Institute was liquidated in 1923.
