Summary/Abstract: Since 1974, democratic systems have replaced authoritarian regimes in more than 30 countries in various regions of the world. This wave of global "democratic revolution" has swept across Southern Europe, Latin America and East Asia, eventually reaching Eastern Europe by the end of the Eighties as well. The Eastern European countries' transition to democracy as they became free from Soviet occupation raises a number of questions, the specific combination of which is not characteristic of other regions, or at least not in this way. Among these problems, our paper tackles questions belonging to the sphere of inquiry concerning civil society and populism.
