Summary/Abstract: Mioriţa, one of the greatest synthesis of the Romanian culture, whose meaning touches the major problems of mankind, a work with great philosophical implications, is known in our ethno-musicology as a pastoral ballad and cannot be taken for “Mioriţa colindă” (the ewe - lamb carol), because each of them has its own content and stylistic characteristics. The simple narrative structure of the poem has generated contradictory opinions due to the subsumed values and the complexity of its meanings, amplified by the existence of a large number of variants, with sensible difference of structure and substance between them. The Little Ewe is known all over the country as a ballad and a carol but with an imprecise function, due to the profound content, the particular beauty and the sacred values which, although overcome by the evolution of the human consciousness, have preserved and sublimed its aesthetic values.
