Summary/Abstract: According to the folk tradition, human health problems, material wealth and social position are cured by means of rites involving the understanding of natural phenomena and social consensus, using empirical means and magical treatment. The ’Căluşari’ (T.N. Romanian men’s folk dance) intervened to take back the person who had been enchanted by the wicked fairies and they restored the balance ruined by their evil actions, using dance, music, costumes, texts, gestures and behaviors. In rural communities, faced with delicate and sometimes dramatic existential problems, the Romanian peasants often resorted to spells. The spell was meant to heal those in distress and was based on speech therapy which combines, on a case by case basis, phyto-, psycho-, kine- and music therapy. At the same time the ’Doina’ (T.N. melancholy Romanian folk song) when it is sung for others, it naturally increases the emotional sensitivity of others, in the idea that pain could resolve itself by physical closeness or communication.
