Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses ways to model the traffic assignment problem using mathematical tools. The focus is on the equivalence between optimality conditions for the traffic assignment problem and variational inequalities which can be associated with this problem. We discuss system and user optimization. There are several different models in the paper, beginning with the simplest one, which implies symmetric cost functions and fixed demands and then moving onto more complicated asymmetrical models with elastic demands. At the end, an algorithm for solving traffic assignment problem, based on ACCPM for variational inequalities, is presented.
