Summary/Abstract: The paper attempts to outline how the black beauty motif is handled by different poets during the period that is conveniently labelled Baroque. It first provides a vivid, numerically based, illustration of the contrasting principles of composition which underlie Renaissance and Baroque poetic practices. Then the black beauty motif is taken up, and, after a brief investigation into its origins, the discussion moves to explore differences of treatment as found in Bunić, Herbert, Marino, and Shakespeare. There is also a fleeting excursion into the problem of »Shakespearean folly«. The general idea is to see how intricately woven Baroque poetic texture is and how much effort must be invested into its explication on the reader’s part.
