Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the current interpretative controversy regarding the sexual/ gender and erotic meanings of English Renaissance drama, with special focus on Jonson’s Epicoene, or The Silent Woman and Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Offering a critical survey of recent contributions to the discussion, the paper attempts to submit Jonson’s city comedy to the kind of meticulous textual analysis that in the case of Shakespeare’s so-called romantic comedies has already become commonplace. The relationship between grammatical and dramatic person, actor and role, playhouse and company, text and performance is kept in view throughout the discussion. The paper concludes that the ambiguous natures of Epicene and Ganymede refuse to be straightforwardly recruited into any of the sexual identities currently on offer.
