Summary/Abstract: The author explores the transformations of the ideas about the social function of the police in the recent global context. Theories about “crowd management” and about the term ‘policing’ are discussed and placed within the Central and Eastern European context. In a social space where the amount of ‘private’ spaces increased radically during the past decades, new forms of policing should be implemented, and the police have to transfer some of its former responsibilities to other private or national security forces.
