Summary/Abstract: Elizabeth Kyublar-Ross differentiated five stages in overcoming grief. They are widely used in studying the behavior under stressful crises with intense character. In essence, the loss of a loved one creates this kind of experience. The five stages described by Kyublar-Ross can be identified in terms of structure and content in funeral rituals practiced by the Bulgarians. This fact provokes the understanding that the genesis of the rituals is strongly influenced by psychological and social needs, rather than religious beliefs.
