Summary/Abstract: The main problem of the education reform in the Republic of Lithuania is change of teachers’ training system. At present teachers to a larger degree are trained to give knowledge within the limits of programme contents and not to form conditions for creative development and moral education of a child. This topical and important problem was outlined by Jonas Laužikas in the fourth decade of the last century. Considering the problem of teacher’s professional training at that time J. Laužikas made a careful study of ideas of different trends and their realization at new schools abroad, particularly in Germany and Austria. The analyzed author came to the conclusion that a significant index of teacher’s culture is clarity of his outlook, eternal spiritual values (Love, Beauty, Honesty, etc.) and their harmony with interests of a person and the nation. In addition to being able to teach children and communicate with them the teacher shall have a socially creative character as his duty is “to help with the human’s spiritual birth”. The expected teachers must coordinate practical knowledge and skills with preparation for future scientific work. The teacher shall always be a spiritual, energetic creator therefore he “needs endless self-education”. Topicality of J. Laužikas’ thoughts and ideas nowadays provokes the necessity for giving more attention to philosophical studies which would contribute to ideological maturity of students at pedagogical universities in Lithuania.
