Summary/Abstract: This study deals with the issue of the so-called Spanish regionalism since the end of the nineteenth century to the last decade of twentieth century. This paper attempts to provide an analysis of Spanish transformation from centralized state to regional state and there are emphasized main features of two specific regions – Catalonia and Basque country (called historic regions) in the contrast to the rest of the Spanish state. The text is divided into two basic parts. The first one contains discussion on the regionalism since the end of the nineteenth century to the 1930s. The second one focuses on the Franco era and the period of transition and democracy consolidation until 1986. The author shows and argues there exist main differences between Catalonia and Basque country which distinguishes process of regionalism in these parts of Spain. As the most important factors influencing the regionalism have been identified especially language, economic development and religion. Conclusion estimates prospects of regionalism in connection with European integration and attempts to describe some long-standing features.
