Summary/Abstract: The research of descriptive character aims to substantiate the necessity of the mainstream school educator's better preparedness to work with pupils with special educational needs, reasoning in two aspects: the analysis of education of pupils with special educational needs (SEN) and the analysis of the competences of educators to educate pupils with SEN. In the article the results of the inquest, carried out by the author and other scholars have been analysed and compared. It has been stated, that approximately 5 % of pupils of mainstream schools have SEN, the knowledge and evaluation of which are indispensable while striving to educate these pupils adequately. The responsibility and competence of the subject (class) teacher to estimate and meet pupil's SEN properly have been emphasised. The research provides the data of insufficient competence of some teachers (especially subject teachers) to identify and meet pupils' SEN and reveals some teachers' adverse attitude towards pupils with SEN. Specific competences of educators, which are necessary while working successfully with pupils with SEN, have been formed in the article.
